lol

The crazy thing about LLMs is that there’s usually a better, easily available tool that can be used instead. In fact, there’s a simple tool called a camera that could’ve done this job better. maybe REI should get one of these old fangled devices.

In fact doesn’t REI already have thousands of bikes in stock that they could have just taken a quick picture of with one of their employees?

Edit: I see now this was actually a photo shoot that ended up being auto enrolled in a meta program so maybe this is more to blame on AI companies trying to shove their products into everything and force people on it!

Advertisers haven’t been given a choice of opting out of Meta’s shittastic AI marketing, so I don’t automatically blame them.

Maybe it’s just me but the “woman” also appears to have male proportions from the waist to the shoulders, appears to be missing a finger, and is clasping a helmet that appears to be already firmly on?

I distinctly get the impression of a women's head on a male body (warn the anti-woke crowd!). The hair is weird too. That steer plus brake handle at the back of the saddle is very funny. As is that weird thing at 11 o'clock on the back wheel. How many of those wires make sense? There are some weird places on the frame. Oh, and that chain where the bottom and top disagree on which side of the wheel they are. The chain is going through the back wheel (that person is going definitely nowhere on that 'bike')

My favorite part is the chain crossing through the rear wheel. This must be REI's M.C. Escher Touring Model.

And the absence of a left crank arm or pedal is interesting.

I think I'm going to ask to see this model when I visit my local REI later this week.

Lots of chain grease on the pant legs for no reason.

Also love that the rear brake rotor is part of the rear wheel’s cassette. Think about the mechanics of that for a second.

Nice to have redundant v brakes on a disc brake bike. Added weight and untrustworthy brakes are highly desired features for cyclists. 😆

The chain appears to be threaded through the spokes, which is…novel. Then again, for some riders i’ve seen, I’d recommend exactly that configuration!

Left hand appears to be a right hand, sans thumb.

Rear disk brake is on the chain side, front derailleur is bizarre, it has disks and rim brakes, drop bars are on the seat, theres no left crank, theres no shadow for her right leg

right foot is floating, for some reason.

Are the wires connected to anything?

This is probably old by now, but I noticed it the other day: how much AI generated images struggle if you ask them to include a mirror. That seems to sum up the problem for me. You have to know what a mirror is and how it works to be able to correctly include it in an image.

spokes, especially front wheel, make no sense.

The troubling thing here is not that Ford had to re-hire people, it's that they are likely doing that so they can try to train models more, to re-fire them.

They drank the commercial discourse around AIgen and LLM all the way through.

Female head pasted on a male body. The head also seems to be floating slightly in the air (or the neck is extremely long). The fingers do not make sense. One foot seems to floating a little in the air. The bike has an additional steer with brakes behind the saddle. And the chain is weaving itself in an extremely dangerous way through the spokes of the back wheel. And finally the shade of bike and rider seems to not follow the usual rules. What a waste....

I understand when some impressionable young AI enthusiast (or even a not so young tech CEO) claims that AI agents are the future of knowledge work, but this admission by the old hands at Ford (Ford!!!) that they "didn't pay enough attention to the experience of their most knowledgeable engineers" is a very convincing proof that we're witnessing a massive case of FOMO afflicting a lot of people who should know better. This will not end well.
