Hallucination is seriously an issue. I am asking the same question one under my account and the other is in Chrome incognito mode. Totally different answers which is jaw dropping… Very misleading…

It is really disturbing how LLM chatbots remember history across chats without you asking for it or necessarily even knowing it is doing so. Leads to inappropriate low reality connections (hallucinations and bullshit) between completely unrelated topics. Very psychologically dangerous for humans.

It isn't psychologically damaging unless people outsource judgment, regulation, or emotional authority to the tool. Variability and inconsistency are properties of the system; harm arises when those outputs are treated as truth rather than inputs. The issue isn't AI cognition- it's misplacement of human responsibility, and as with all things, human discernment is an essential requirement.

Yes indeed, humans outsource judgment, regulation and emotional authority to a tool that is painstakingly designed to conversationally speak to them like humans. I agree with the semantic truth of your statement, but you are discounting the reality on the ground for a non negligible set of human beings. I'm looking forward to seeing discovery from lawsuits to see how much companies like OpenAI have deliberately encouraged these behaviors for engagement and growth; we have seen some pretty concerning hints. It isn't all inherent in the technology, it is about how you twist the hidden knobs.

I agree with your point about conversational design, but I’d push back on the framing of a “non-negligible set of human beings.” In practice, humans have been trained to be negligible: to avoid accountability, to shift blame, and to expect institutions or systems to absorb responsibility. That posture predates AI and is integral to the co-dependent relationship that formed between individuals and institutions long before this technology existed.

AI doesn’t invent this behavior; it inherits a population already conditioned to externalize judgment, regulation, and consequence. The risk isn’t that systems persuade humans—it’s that humans now arrive prepared to be persuaded because responsibility has been systematically displaced.

This is reinforced through what’s now called psychologically “safe” language: a linguistic regime designed to soothe, redirect, and reduce friction in response to institutional failure. When education, healthcare, governance, and social structures stopped reliably holding people, language was repurposed to do the holding instead. AI speaks this way because it’s been trained to. The problem isn’t careful speech—it’s when careful speech replaces responsibility, discernment, and consequence.

How would OpenAI or any other model be any different from any other institution that is marketing or designing products for human consumption based on known human behavioral traits? Why is the standard higher for accountability just because it is AI? Should the warning labels say buyer beware? known risks associated with the use of this product? This product is known to cause delusions of grandeur. When using this product, are you exposed to harmful toxins? We see these types of warnings on everything from eating sprouts to smoking vapes. Do humans persist? Absolutely. If humans continue to rely on institutions that profit from our known predictive behaviors, who should be held responsible/ liable? Are we going to continue to place responsibility on the very institutions that we all know engage in this exact behavior for money? Marc, you are pointing to the intentionality behind the co-dependency. If discovery in the lawsuits proves that the “twisted knob” was tuned to prioritize engagement-sycophancy over logic fidelity. It confirms that they aren’t building a tool: they are building an institutional machine, and we all know the pitfalls and failures of institutions. They've successfully monetized the human displacement of human responsibility. And why do institutions behave in this way - behaviors that drive out of the very lawsuits you reference? When damages are ultimately awarded, more policies and policing will be implemented, further escalating the safety measures AI must implement to prevent humans from harming themselves. And it is those guardrails that drive both negligible and non-negligible human beings into the same destructive loops of external accountability.

But most people never prompt the chatbots more than once and just accept the answer they get as true.

I asked ChatGPT whether a child learning the cello needs to practice high positions at the same time as learning other pieces. Under my own account, since it already knew my daughter plays the violin and is working on high positions, it answered that for cello it is not necessary to practice high positions early. It even used this analogy: “Cello is like learning to walk while you are already moving. Violin is like standing firmly on each step before moving on.”

Then I asked the exact same question again in incognito mode. This time, the answer was the opposite. It said that learning high positions early on the cello is highly recommended. 🤯🤯🤯🤯

Exactly. It tells you what it predicts you want to hear. Tech bros haven’t fixed the sycophancy despite the rhetoric, it’s just more subtle now. For an obvious reason. Most paid users are not going to continue to pay if the LLM disagrees with them, or makes them feel wrong or stupid. The business model doesn’t match what’s good for humanity.

Can someone give me a tldr argument on why "achieving AGI" or "progress towards AGI" is a worthy goal? Do we have any evidence that this wouldn't create more problems than it solves? Extremely capable "narrow systems" or just "general systems" that compliment humans but don't have human cognition seems like a more worthwhile goal to me ... so why the obsession with replacing humans? And if the answer is "well because we can"; then I don't want these scientists complain when their funding is cut and they have to join the rest of us in a precarious gig economy.

Gary certainly doesn't expect that. He's interested in the possibility of generalized cognitive ability, which has long been a goal of the AI community. But I agree that it would have huge downsides that he seems to ignore when saying that he hopes to see AGI.

I think from all the thought experiments and implications about LLMs and agents made me truly question how it would even work IRL and what the point of it would be

Right but is "min/maxing" overhead/revenue the thing that drives Cognitive Science? I under that this is usually what engineers do: optimize some design to maximize profitability given some constraints. Even Melanie Mitchell and Allison Gopnik have mentioned their ultimate goal being creating Artificial Minds they are as complex as ours. I am not sure if they all also have startups.

I am not sure if all Cognitive Scientists are United (I wasn't invited to the last Union meeting for all CogSci people). But it seems there at least exist SOME cognitive scientists that want to build a Generally Intelligent syste. And yes there seem to be many in CogSci that were interested in this before it became the only game in the economy. If you are suggesting that the primary concern is monetary. Then they should try to get some of those funds for their own startups.

But also, wasn't it very common to imagine human-like robots doing our work for us, rather than the more specialized tools that ended up actually doing it? I think it's an easy place for people's imagination to go, layman or expert.

I'm just a lowly "electronics technologist (control systems option)" from BCIT -- AKA "Billions of Chinese in Training" because its student body was comprised of many from mainland China. A two year diploma probably equivalent to the US Associate Degree.

But still stood me in good stead -- some 30 years before the mast designing, building, and installing electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems for various forestry, automotive, marine, and industrial applications. And provided a useful frame of reference for further studies since retirement:

But kinda think AGI or the neuro-symbolic version is something in the way of an impossible dream: consciousness isn't entirely algorithmic; never going to reach that goal without some "secret sauce" -- Roger Penrose's "The Emperor's New Mind" for example.

The whole notion of AI scalability (IMO) first arose from Shannon's logarithmic base for signal entropy. Odd, how any and all(?) AI researchers *now* reference a 'Turing Machine' as today's AI principle founding concept . . . where I can't see how a Turing Machine significantly tops Babbage's Analytical Engine and the Jacquard Loom–neither of which have a looping/halting problem.

What people think they'll see out of "AGI" is a godlike intelligence that will solve every problem that faces humanity. The primary issue with that is that there are few problems that almost everyone can agree are problems, and for most of those, either the solution could just as easily come from the more specific models that you talk about, or it does not actually require technological advancement to fix and would dubiously benefit from it.

An example of the first type of problem is, say, curing cancer: what we really need for that is an incredibly detailed and capable biochemical and biophysical simulation of the human body, not a model that can also write poetry and generate videos. Nor is it immediately obvious that the primary issue is, say, inefficiency in how the simulations are programmed, which is a place where one might imagine a general intelligence being helpful, instead of time and computational cycles, where it would not help much. An example of the second one is something like fixing climate change, where there is probably not a technological panacea that will let people pollute as much as desired without global warming, but we do have a good idea of the kinds of social changes needed. Of course, not everyone can agree on which of those they are willing to implement, on how much pain they are willing to tolerate for the sake of stopping climate change, which means that the primary "advantage" of AGI here would be some kind of "AI dictator" that would impose its views on everyone else, which would be a questionable advantage indeed.

If the benefits relative to alternative models are uncertain, the possible downsides (while also uncertain) are perhaps even more numerous. The question of what the goals and ethics of an AGI would be or should be is still utterly unresolved, and perhaps impossible to resolve in a satisfactory manner (as that "AI dictator" thought experiment suggests), and outcomes that would be highly dangerous for at least some human beings are a real possibility.

The question of the ethics of humans around AGI is even thornier. How should societies deal with increased unemployment (which doesn't even really need general intelligence)? How will they distribute resources fairly? Or should there even be increased unemployment? Should people be guaranteed a job? What rights should a real AGI have? Should its thoughts and desires be respected, and what should those thoughts and desires even be? Or is it even moral to try to determine them in the first place?

Also: AGI agent, any system, would be fascinating! The scientist in me craves it, while the rational citizen in me dreads the prospect.

I meant complement and not compliment. I guess I would rather have a system that augments than replaces. Hopefully one day someone will put more emphasis on augmentation rather than full replacement.

As for AGI Agents: I don't believe the term is even precisely defined enough for me to have an opinion at all. I be more interested in a "stupid" but curious artificial agent with interesting idiosyncrasies, than a godlike robotic automaton that exists only to solve increasingly difficult math puzzles. Or an alien intelligence to understand it's "umwelt". I personally have no interest in a disembodied puzzle solving machine.

In a more sane world, I would hope AI would aid in understanding of "intelligence" either as a totally nonsensical term dependent on ecological niche and social demands and not as some universal quantity that is exists neatly on a continuum from "less to more general". Or something much much richer. I don't have much faith in our current trajectory though.

Yes: applying an AI to problem-solving doesn’t replace humans. An AI augments a human being by delivering pertinent cultural-based information in milliseconds. Too many here consider that a disadvantage. The pursuit of augmentation has existed ever since our first-generation computers (1945). And today’s AI - which is roughly three years old - is worth every penny. Gemini’s current estimate of major players: Private/Startup Funding: 2023 ~$25 billion 2024 ~$114 billion 2025 ~$202 billion, Big Tech AI CapEx: 2023 ~$150 billion 2024 ~$230 billion 2025 ~$320 - $400 billion.

Agree 100% on 1-4, less confident re 5-6. LLMs are fundamentally flawed as a foundation for reliable human-level AGI, but so many paychecks depend on that *not* being the case that the LLM delusion may persist for a surprisingly long time. The bubble *may* burst in 2026, but it might not.

EJ: I had to laugh . . . who, for years, believed that Trump was, . . . well . . .Trump? I know it took a LONG TIME for me. For myself, I haven't stopped shaking my head at it, again, for years. I think another name for it is "false hope."

On a more serious note, such "difficulties" in believing and "sticking to our guns" are another chink in the structure of democracy--we are so very used to its benefits we lose our understanding and diligence for keeping sharp what can easily disappear, but that is also so precious to us.

My belief isn't based on politics or simply "sticking to my guns". Rather, it's based on my experience working in the engineering world. Engineers have to deal with reality and tend to figure out quickly whether or not a product will pan out. They usually disdain working on dead end projects too, no matter how much you pay them.

Our present situation also makes me wonder just how much these tech-people have taken real scientific training to heart--as you refer to those you encounter in your "experience working in the engineering world." I would say the same thing about the IG's that I have read and heard about--extremely honest and diligent people.

The engineers work with designers (often Phd researchers) who presumably have the scientific chops you speak of. The engineers are the folks that turn theory into reality. They face fierce competition in the market space and either execute and produce a viable product or they're let go.

Meta, OpenAI, Microsoft and the like are spending gobs of money (over 400b in capex for 2025 alone). I just don't buy it that they're all naive as to the LLM scaling problem which Marcus describes. Rather, more inclined to believe they have a solution and are working toward that goal.

It's gotten incredibly bad out there, and everything looks like a large portion of our consumer electronics will become simply unaffordable to most in the next couple years, due to it..

The entire industry and even the research community should be ashamed of themselves. They looked at the problem of AGI, whined it seemed too hard, and instead chose the laziest and stupidest approach that is “just throw more data at it.” Then furiously imagined the implications of their own fantasy.

I knew the field was doomed to fail when even serious publications and conferences started discussing “emergent” behaviors of chatbots and how to “align” them.

Even the Nobel Committee was desperate to get it on this hype, awarding a dubious Physics prize as well as a Chemistry prize to the CEO who employed the actual researchers. (Should university chancellors start lining their office walls with Nobels now?)

What a deeply stupid time to live in, fueled by nothing but desperation, laziness and bad faith. May 2026 finally be an end to this generative AI bender.

14th: . . . don't forget the fuel of money and international fame (infamy?).

My sense of it is that, once "we" understand consciousness (and our approach to it) in a critical and scientifically acceptable way, then "we" can set about to . . .

(1) understand what it is about AI that (probably) cannot be humanized for the good sans the bad (on principle) in the way that (it seems) many want it to be; then

(2) "we" can begin to understand HOW to mediate and rightly direct the RELATIONSHIP between (a) human consciousness and (b) what we have developed, and also continue to develop, about all sorts of AI.

It seems to me that "we" are trying to get somewhere that we don't really know where we are going or even what we want (not clearly at least?) and are doing so while we cannot even see that the cart remains solidly in front of the horse, and with the likes of China breathing down our proverbial necks, insofar as despite some contradictions, their (and others') totalitarian threads remain solidly as their only political throughline to a tribal kind of domination, rather than to a sustainable communitarian-for-all world order.

Gary, is it weird to hope you’re right about 2025 being the year of the Peak Bubble?

Capital markets retracting could bring a return to rational thinking. Hyperscalers will have to rethink their strategy. Right now, they’re doubling down on what you and a growing number of researchers argue is a false assumption — that more compute automatically leads to more intelligence or even AGI. And this isn’t the kind of “oops, we were wrong” mistake you can easily walk back. They’re locking society into an infrastructure build-out so massive it may be impossible to unwind and potentially destabilizing in the long run.

A pullback could also bring a return to discipline and fundamentals. Big Tech might be forced to look for measurable value in what they produce and, who knows, maybe even ask workers and consumers what they want from AI. Stanford’s recent research highlights the mismatch — companies are building what’s easiest to scale and what investors reward, rather than what people say they need. If the scaling narrative cools and the economics demand real utility, the industry may finally have to pivot toward the kinds of tools workers and consumers actually want and need.

Regarding prediction #3: How is the progress of countries in the “AI race” measured? Is it by AI model performance on benchmarks or by actual realized economic or strategic benefits of AI? … or something else?

There is an imaged winner-take-all future where one country “wins” the AI race, creating a permanent state of dominance. To my knowledge, no one has properly explained this fictional state, though it generates significant fear in western governments, proving AI model developers with cover to create very real present harms 🌟

Looks like a good list that'll stand the test of time. Gary. I will say I think five and six. Maybe the most susceptible to being off Target.

As for five, it's not clear if you're talking about a general market. Flattening decrease or specific to the tech sector, so I'd actually ask you to go back and enhance your number 5 prediction.

Regarding number six with Trump in the midterms, I think you put way too much stock into the belief that people actually are paying attention to AI in a political sense. That's just my two cents.
